Ursino castle (the origin of the name is not sure),was built by Federico II di Svevia, between the 1939 and the 1250, as part of a campaign of fortification along the empire's border. The encharger for the building was Riccardo da Lentini. At the origin the castle was located very close to the sea and was surrounded by a moat and by very advanced defensive works. During the eruption of the 1669 the castle have been surrounded by the lava and the lava flow,proceedeing towards to the sea ,took the castle away from the sea some hundred meters. Afther a long ad accurate excavation works the castle is back to his original look. In the '400 the castle was the seat of the Aragonesi royal famil, i the future the castle have been used as garrison and prision.
In the 30S of the las century 1934 it becames Civic Museum. In its rooms they are exhibided finds of Greek and Roman age. Works of different eras and testimonials of Catania's artistic productions,thanks to the donatios of Biscari prince, of the Baron Zappala-Asmundo and the Benedettini preast,and important acquisition have been in the last century. About the works in exibition the most importan is “La Madonna col bambino” by Antonello da Saliba;as well are exibited works by Bernazzo,Bernardino Niger,Travi,Minniti,Stomer,Novelli,Rapisardi.
